Airports

Sri Lanka has a single international aviation facility which is the Bandaranaike International Airport, located just 22 miles north of the capital city of Colombo. Flights to the airport operate from a large number of Asian destinations as well as a good selection of international cities. European visitors can take advantage of flights from the UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. There are several flights a week from London's Gatwick Airport care of SriLankan Airlines, the country’s national carrier.

The airport operates a single terminal which is equipped with banking and currency exchange facilities, plus dining outlets, shops and communication facilities. There are several hotel travel desks on the exit from the Arrivals hall for those who need to book accommodation.

Getting to and from the airport is best achieved by taxi or hotel pick up. Most of the reputable hotels in Nuwara Eliya will be able to arrange private transport for guests fro the airport to the hotel. Alternatively, it is possible to take a bus into Colombo from where public transport options to Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are available.

Public Transport

By road from Colombo, the city is best reached by travelling via the city of Kandy, although routes from the south are also available. It’s possible to take a bus all the way to Nuwara Eliya from Colombo (via Kandy), although the journey time is six hours.

The train also connects Colombo with Nuwara Eliya via Kandy, but takes even longer than the bus. Taking the train is a better option in terms of comfort, however. Train services stop short of the city, at Nanu Oya, from where it’s necessary to take a taxi for the remainder of the journey. Female visitors are wise to avoid travelling alone on either buses or trains, and in the event that they have to are advised to sit away from Sri Lankan males.

Once in Nuwara Eliya, the town is small enough to get around on foot. If you are tired or need to travel longer distances, autorickshaws are available for a reasonable price.
