The country’s main airport, Bandaranaike International Airport, is located just seven miles from Negombo. The airport features a single terminal that is highly security conscious after having experienced terrorist activity in the past.
Passenger facilities in the terminal include currency exchange outlets, snack bars, shops, tour agencies and a tourist information desk. Most flights arriving at the airport originate from points around Asia although there are flights that originate in Europe, with a change in the Middle East.
Arriving passengers can reach Negombo by taxi, bus or by pre-arranged transfer service provided by their hotel. Taxis queue outside the Arrivals hall. Information on bus routes and schedules can be obtained from the staff at the tourist information counter in the Arrivals hall.

Negombo’s public transport network includes bus and train services that connect the city with surrounding towns. Buses run more frequently and reliably than trains, but train fares are lower.

In addition to buses and trains, you’ll also find taxis and motorised three-wheel rickshaws. Both types of taxis can be hired for long or short journeys, with drivers who speak English usually happy to act as guides. If you choose to hire a taxi for a tour, it’s recommended that you negotiate the price up front, as meters are typically not used.
Hiring a car or motorbike in Negombo is not a popular option as the traffic is typically chaotic and driving can be dangerous.
