Airports

Bandaranaike International Airport, also known as Colombo-Katunayake, is the only airport providing international flights into Sri Lanka. Consequently, Bandaranaike is the chief gateway to Kandy and the rest of the country for overseas visitors.

The airport is located 22 miles north of the city of Colombo and is a hub for national carrier SriLankan Airlines. Currently the airport maintains connections with a large number of international destinations including flights from London Gatwick Airport operated by First Choice Airways. Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands are among the other European destinations that have flight connections to Bandaranaike International Airport, while Asian cities are also served.

The airport is reasonably well equipped with regards to facilities for passengers, with essentials such as banking and currency exchange services on offer, as well as restaurants, communication facilities and a first-aid centre. A taxi service counter is located in the Arrivals hall of the airport. The journey to Kandy from the airport takes approximately three hours.

Public Transport

From Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city, travellers can take a train direct to Kandy. However, the intercity express train is the only service that offers a reasonable level of comfort and a speedy connection, as other services are invariably crowded and rarely run to schedule. Booking at least one week in advance of travel is recommended to be sure of a seat on the intercity service.

Buses provide a reasonable and slightly cheaper alternative to trains. Connecting Colombo with Kandy are comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles. Lone female travellers are advised to avoid choosing seats next to Sri Lankan men if they wish to avoid unnecessary attention.

Within Kandy, auto rickshaws are one of the most convenient ways to get around. Prices should be negotiated before you get in and must be bartered for. For the most part, drivers speak reasonable English and are friendly and helpful. Visitors can also choose to hire a private car with a driver for daytrips.
