Renovated in 2005, this 400-year-old property, now known as the Amangalla Hotel is now rated at one of the top resorts in Sri Lanka. Amangalla comes from 'Aman', Sanskrit for peace 'Aman' and 'galla' which is the Sinhalese name for the town. Located within Galle Fort this hotel is a collection of buildings, originally used as headquarters for the Dutch Commander and his officers, and later by British soldiers but became a hotel in 1865.
