Founded by Hercules, Seville has a long, varied and rich history at the hands of the Romans and Moors and grew to be one of Spain's most artistic and cultured provincial capitals. Seville prospered greatly from the River Guadalquivir following the discovery of America and this is where Columbus' remains purportedly are.
Seville's most celebrated museum is one of Spain's most important fine arts museums. The many exhibition rooms feature Sevillan art from Gothic times up to the 20th century and the building itself is interesting, revamped from its convent days in the 17th century. Outside in Plaza del Museo is an open-air art market on Sundays. Phone: +34 954 221 829.
Parade of the Three Wise Men: a great festival for children where the Three Kings show up after the 12 days of Christmas in a golden carriage. They make their way through the streets of Seville handing out toys and sweets to kids.
Climb Cerro de Carambolo for the best views of Seville. Although out of town, the hill is accessed by motorway and buses run here from Plaza de Armas bus station throughout the day.
Seville is compact and bijou and its pedestrianised centre is best explored on foot or by bicycle. Major city sights and shopping streets are within walking distance but for travel farther afield, buses are the next best option, while trains provide transport to other towns in the region.
