Santiago de Compostela has been an important site for Christian pilgrims for centuries, as it is believed that the remains of St James the Apostle were found here. Today Santiago ranks as the third most important site for Christian pilgrims in the world, after Jerusalem and Rome.

The old quarter of Santiago de Compostela provides a storybook atmosphere that appeals to the imagination, and children will enjoy exploring the labyrinth of narrow streets and lanes. This pedestrian area is paved with old slabs of stone and boasts ancient squares featuring fascinating gargoyles and ornate fountains. In addition, there are child-friendly parks, indoor playgrounds, museums, a tourist train and plenty of outdoor activities.

Dia de los tres Reyes: also known as Twelfth Night, this is an important festival for children throughout the country and the time when they receive their Christmas presents. The three kings, or wise men, arrive on this Feast of the Epiphany and bring gifts of all sorts for children and adults alike.
The highlight of Santiago de Compostela is without doubt its spectacular cathedral. A stroll through this lovely, historic town will take you through plazas lined with magnificent palaces, churches and monuments and past the many mansions lining Rua del Villar and Rua Nueva.

Aeropuerto de Lavacolla (SCQ) serves Santiago de Compostela, and is located 11kms (seven miles) northeast of the city. Although it’s a relatively small airport, it handles approximately two million passengers annually.
