Situated off the western coast of Africa, in the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is home to the biggest city in the archipelago (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) which also doubles as one of two capital cities for the autonomous community. Known as a 'miniature continent', Gran Canaria fosters a fascinating array of biospheres that have earned it international protection under UNESCO.
Golfing on Gran Canaria goes back to the late 19th century when the first course (Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas) was built to cater for British tourists. This particular course later moved from Las Palmas city centre to Bandama. In all, there are nine courses on the island: five in the south and four in the northeast.
Located at San Bartome de Tirajana, these sand dunes cover an expansive stretch of coastline and constitute one of the island's most unique natural features. In the heart of the dunes you'll find La Charca, a lagoon that doubles as an important nesting ground for endangered migratory birds. A famous lighthouse is also found here.
A highway circles the island of Gran Canaria, making travel by hire car an attractive means of getting around. Vehicles are available both from the airport and the resorts and the island's large hotels. The northwestern sector of the island receives the least number of tourists and as a result there are fewer access roads and side streets branching off from the highway here.
In the unfortunate event that you fall ill while visiting Gran Canaria, you'll enjoy access to top-quality health-care infrastructure well suited to international visitors. The most common health threat facing tourists is mere overexposure to the sun, placing hydration and regular sunscreen application at the top of visitors' lists of precautionary measures. Citizens of EU nations qualify for discounted medical care by presenting their European Health Insurance Card. Less serious medical problems may be addressed at a pharmacy (farmacia).
