Those arriving at Gran Canaria by air will land at Gran Canaria Airport, which is conveniently situated between Las Palmas (11 miles away) and the touristy region to the south (15 miles away). A major hub for Binter Canarias Airlines, this is the largest airport in the archipelago and represents the only such facility with two runways. For many visitors to the Canaries, this is their first stop before connecting via an inter-island connection to one of the neighbouring islands.

Terminal A is used for domestic flights to mainland Spain as well as for numerous connections across Europe. Meanwhile, terminals B and C are used primarily for inter-island flights. Facilities at the airport are good and include all essentials.

Taxis are readily available to carry passengers from the terminal to virtually any city on the island. There is also a shuttle bus that travels to major island destinations.

A highway circles the island of Gran Canaria, making travel by hire car an attractive means of getting around. Vehicles are available both from the airport and the resorts and the island’s large hotels. The northwestern sector of the island receives the least number of tourists and as a result there are fewer access roads and side streets branching off from the highway here.

Public transportation consists of fleets of air-conditioned buses that connect major cities across the island. Many tourists take the bus from Playa del Ingles in the south to and from the shopping district in Las Palmas. It’s possible to purchase discount bus passes that allow for 10 trips.
There is currently no train servicing Gran Canaria, though plans are in the works for a future railway.
