Bilbao Introduction

Bilbao is located in Spain’s Basque territory, on the coast near the northern French border. Long a centre of commerce, the city is a major seaport and possesses all the amenities one expects in a big city of over 350,000. Bilbao is also home to many museums, including a Guggenheim, and possesses an old town medieval neighbourhood know as Casco Viejo. Visitors to the old town enjoy strolling amongst a maze of narrow streets filled with shops, monuments and bars.

The Basque city of Bilbao has been drawing visitors with its centuries-old churches, plazas, theatres and parks for decades, but the recent addition of the world-famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has given the city even greater appeal. Located on Spain’s Atlantic coast, not far from the border with France, Bilbao is also a major seaport.

While museums and old architecture are Bilbao highlights, the city has plenty in the way of attractions that will appeal to young visitors and sporting enthusiasts alike. Ranking as one of the best places in northern Spain to witness a bullfight, Bilbao maintains this traditional sport along with more modern sports, such as football and golf. The coast provides not only traditional fishing villages but pretty, secluded beaches where swimming and other beach activities can be pursued.

The city’s old town, Casco Viejo, is where most visitors spend the majority of their time and can be toured on foot, thanks to its compact nature. If you want a break from the busy centre, its bustling markets and museums, catch the funicular to the peak of Artxanda Mountain and take in the serene views of Bilbao from afar or make a trip to Etxebarria Park and make use of its excellent sporting facilities.

However, as the airport only serves European connections, international visitors will need to arrive at one of Spain’s larger international airports before catching a domestic flight to Bilbao. Major European airlines serve the airport as well as a handful of low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Clickair.
