The Basque city of Bilbao has been drawing visitors with its centuries-old churches, plazas, theatres and parks for decades, but the recent addition of the world-famous Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has given the city even greater appeal. Located on Spain's Atlantic coast, not far from the border with France, Bilbao is also a major seaport.
Having been in operation since 1890, today’s Arriaga Theatre is just one of several that have been built on the same site over the years. The present-day construction, named after Bilbao composer Juan Crosotomo de Arriaga, was completed in 1919 and has been likened to the Paris Opera House, thanks to its ornate exterior. The oldest quarter of the city deserves exploration and can be easily toured on foot. A compact warren of pedestrianised streets, the old town is bursting with coffee shops, boutiques and markets as well as some of the city’s best nightlife. It is here you’ll find attractions like Santander, one of the city’s main railway stations, and Plaza Nueva, historic churches and the bustling Mercado de la Ribera covered market.
Arriving by train is quicker and more comfortable, but also more expensive. Rail services link Bilbao with Madrid, Vigo and Barcelona as well as with regional cities such as Santander and Leon. Depending on your destination of origin, you will arrive at one of three stations: Santander Station, Abando Station or Atxuri Station.
