Avila Overview

Located west of Madrid 1130 metres above sea level is the city of Avila. In the summer, due to its height, the temperatures are cooler than the rest of Spain. Surrounded by Castile-León, this is one of the best preserved castle sites, by the World Heritage. Well-known as the birthplace and home of Santa Teresa of Jesus (a devout nun who wrote poems) one can also enjoy local sweetmeats made by the nuns. Winter is normally cold, but allows a step back through the historic town to feel what it might have been like 800 years ago. History is what this city has an abundance of such as the Cathedral of Avila constructed in the 10th century. Many small restaurants and cake shops are located throughout the city, some offering Avila veal - something very special and unique to this city. The town is so popular that it is served by over 20 trains a day from Madrid. Hotels are available of this spectacular city, in many styles and to fit any budget.
