Almeria refers to both the province and the capital of the province in the Andalucian region of Spain. The city enjoys a prime Mediterranean location and as such enjoys year-round good weather, making it a popular destination with both summer vacationers and those looking to escape the cold winters of other EU countries.

Besides its fantastic climate, Almeria has significant historical sites, having been founded by Abd ar-Rahman III of Cordoba in AD 955. Remnants of the city’s Moorish past are still present in some parts of the city and some of its key buildings occupy sites that were once home to mosques and other Islamic structures. With this in mind, Almeria isn’t short on sightseeing opportunities.

As a destination for outdoors enthusiasts, Almeria also has plenty to offer. The Sierra Nevada mountains are within easy distance and present opportunities for numerous activities. Great beaches, meanwhile, are havens for water sports enthusiasts as well as for families with children or those simply looking for a spot of relaxation.

Rich with cultural, Almeria offers venues such as the Centro de Arte Museo de Almería, the Olive Oil Museum and the Casino Cultural. Perhaps the highlight, however, is the splendid old Moorish castle known as the Alcazaba, which although not quite as grand as Granada’s Alhambra, is nevertheless inspiring.

The city receives plenty of visitors across the year and caters well to their needs with an ample selection of accommodation. There’s an absence of international chain hotels, but no shortage of independently owned establishments offering local character and style. Prices tend to be in the mid-range to upmarket brackets. Almeria is easy to reach, whether travelling by land or air. The majority of foreign visitors arrive by airplane, taking advantage of the city’s own international airport located a short drive from the city centre. Buses and taxis offer options for getting around the city and to neighbouring destinations in the province. However, a hire car is by far the most convenient mode of transport if you plan on regular and frequent travel.

Weather

Almeria’s climate is both desert and Mediterranean influenced, meaning that it’s hot, or at the very least warm, throughout the year. Many say the province and city experience the most agreeable weather of any destination in Spain as it experiences 320 days of sunshine per year.

Summers are hot and see the mercury climb as high as 30°C and frequently higher. Winters are warm with daytime temperatures rarely falling below 20°C. Rainfall is infrequent and distributed across the seasons. In light of perpetually good weather, a holiday can be enjoyed in Almeria at any time of the year.
