Alicante is situated on the Costa Blanca in southern Valencia. The north of the city is surrounded by mountains and experiences its own micro-climate. The coastal regions in the south see a mild climate all year round with the sea breeze ensuring that it never gets too hot. The summer months generally experience average temperatures of low to mid-30s (oC) while in January, the height of winter, daytime temperatures rarely reach above 10oC.
Shopping is also a popular pastime here, and if you want to indulge in some retail therapy you should head straight to Avenida de Maisonnave, the heart of the shopping district. You will find an abundance of shops here which include trendy boutiques and department stores. There are other shopping centres located on Avenida Alfonso el Sabio, La Rambla, Calle del Teatro and Calle Gerona. For inexpensive souvenirs, visit the central market where you will find a variety of gift ideas.
These remains belong to the Ibero-Roman fortified town of Lucentum and date back as far as the 4th century BC. The area is enormous; stretching over 30,000 squared metres, but so far only a quarter of it has been excavated. There is a walled area which can easily be explored on foot and the site is home to hot springs, souvenir shops and ancient streets. The area was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1961.
Alicante's main airport is El Altet International, a busy air hub seeing six million passengers every year. The majority of fights are low budget and charter operated by airlines such as easyJet, Monarch and Flybe.
If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from a medical emergency while you are in Alicante, there are many good hospitals throughout the city. If you are from Europe, you should make sure that you carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your bag at all times; this will enable you to access free emergency health care. If you have a minor problem, there are many pharmacies open until late.
