Transport options to and from Johannesburg are very good, although once you arrive in the city, the public transport network can be very unreliable and occasionally unsafe. Most international flights fly direct into Johannesburg International Airport, which is just 25kms from the city centre.
International Transport
Most international connections fly directly into the small but well-equipped Johannesburg International Airport. If you’re looking for information on the city, the Gauteng Tourism Authority has a branch in the International Arrivals Hall. Currency exchange booths are open 24 hours and ATMs are also available. Located just 25km from the city centre, the airport is about 30 minutes drive from some of the northern suburbs. You’ll find taxis lined up outside the exit and you should discuss the price before getting in. A cheaper and reliable option is to take the Magic Bus Shuttle, found in the Multistory Parkade. You can call them to book on: +27 11 394 6902/3 or even email them ahead of time at info@magicbus.co.za.
Public Transportation
Rail journeys to and from Johannesburg can be an experience as they pass through some stunning scenery. The Blue Train and the more luxurious Rovos Rail are the most popular companies. Both travel between Pretoria and Cape Town via Johannesburg.
If you prefer to drive to Johannesburg, there are plenty of good connections. The N1 connects Johannesburg with Cape Town and Pretoria; the N4 connects to Nelspruit (Kruger gateway); and the N3 with Durban. If you would rather take a scenic route, the Garden Route from Cape Town is exceptional. Johannesburg is best explored by car but you must be aware that drivers are aggressive and travelling by tourist coaches or taxis are better choices for many. You should never leave any valuables in your car. Recommended parking spots include the Carlton Garage.
Bus travel is not recommended as buses can get very crowded and hot. They are also unreliable and sometimes even unsafe. Intercity buses, which include Greyhound, Intercape and Translux, all arrive at Johannesburg's Park station.
Taxis must be called in advance as you cannot hail any from the streets. Reliable taxi firms include Roses Taxi (tel. +27 11 403 9625) or Maxi Taxi (tel. +27 11 648 1212).
