Johannesburg, known as Jo'burg to the locals, is the largest city in the whole of South Africa and home to more than three million residents. Located at the heart of Gauteng Province, Johannesburg has an economy which is still rooted in the gold industry. Despite the fact that many mines are no longer operational, former mines and the mine dumps had a lasting impact on the appearance of the urban landscape and the industrial structure.
There are some great family activities and sights that will keep children entertained. The kids will love to visit Gold Reef City and see a re-creation a mining town. The entire family will enjoy the Lion Park, where they can see the animals in their natural habitat. The discovery centre and the zoo are spots that will surely keep their imagination going and a day of paintball is always a fun-filled time.

Human Rights Day: 21 March is Human Rights Day and a public holiday. On this day in 1996, the South African Human Rights Commission was established to promote respect for human rights, along with protection, development and attainment of human rights. The organisation also monitors and assesses the observance of human rights in South Africa.
Although many people simply pass through Johannesburg on their way to safaris or nature reserves, there are many things of interest if you take the time to explore the city. Joining a tour group is a very good way to see the major sights.
Transport options to and from Johannesburg are very good, although once you arrive in the city, the public transport network can be very unreliable and occasionally unsafe. Most international flights fly direct into Johannesburg International Airport, which is just 25kms from the city centre.
