Transport options to and from Durban are very good. However, public transport in the city is unreliable and not encouraged for first-time visitors. Most international visitors arrive at Durban International Airport, situated a short drive down the south coast of the city, which has a very limited number of international flights. The bus and minibus network within the city can be unreliable and is not recommended for tourists. Taxis are plentiful and reliable.

With Durban International’s limited number of international flights, most foreign visitors pass through OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg before boarding domestic flights to Durban. The airport is also used for domestic flights. There are plans for a large new international airport at La Mercy, north of Durban, which is likely to increase the number of international flights into the province. You’ll find taxis lined up outside the exit and you should discuss the price before getting in. A cheaper and reliable option is to take a shuttle bus services that transport you directly to your hotel.

There are scores of flights between Johannesburg and Durban, as well as regular flights to other centres such as Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. You can travel from the major centres to Durban by car or bus service. The road network is excellent, especially the national highway from Johannesburg and Pretoria. There are trains from a limited number of cities, but bus transport is a better bet. There are regular intercity bus services including Greyhound, Intercape and Translux. These all arrive at Durban station, which can be crowded and intimidating. It is best to arrange for your hotel to collect you at the station’s bus depot to avoid haggling for a taxi or being delayed.
Rental cars are widely available and reasonably priced. If you are not sure of the route you will be travelling, it might be worthwhile asking the rental company to provide you with a driver for your journey.

The Durban area is best explored by car but you must be aware that some drivers can be aggressive and impatient. Travelling by tourist coaches or taxis are better choices for those who are timid or unsure. Always drive with your doors locked and windows closed and never leave any valuables visible in your car. Try to park in parking garages as opposed to street parking.
Taxis must be called in advance as you cannot hail any from the streets.
