Top Things to See

Spend the day on Umhlanga Beach
If you're staying in Durban, take a day trip to Umhlanga Rocks up the coast and discover how the country's rich enjoy their holidays. The beachfront is lined with expensive condominiums and luxury hotels, but the beach is unspoilt and perfect for swimming. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the beach, so you can make a day of it. Alternatively, you can head for the casino complex at nearby Umdloti.

Visit the Valley of a Thousand Hills
To experience one of the most scenic parts of the province take a tour or drive to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, which is inland from Durban on the way to the provincial capital, Pietermaritzburg. While there, you can call in on the PheZulu Safari Park (see cultural activities section).

Harbour and coastal cruises
Setting off from the Pleasure Cruise Terminal in the harbour, you can take an interesting cruise around the massive Durban harbour, or an exhilarating trip along the coast to Umhlanga Rocks. Located nearby is the Royal Natal Yacht Club, where international travellers meet up with local sailing folk.

Drive down the Wild Coast
A great day's drive takes you along the southern coast to the Wild Coast Resort and Casino, which is located in a very scenic area of the former Transkei region. This was a very popular destination when gambling was banned elsewhere in the province - these days it is more relaxed and great for a family outing. You can take part in water sports on the river, play a round of golf or enjoy the world-class facilities at the resort.

Take a Midlands Meander
Just north of Pietermaritzburg, you can experience country life in the Midlands, which is home to Michaelhouse, one of the country’s top private boy’s schools and a host of small resorts. It is known for the number of artists who have settled here, so there are plenty of galleries to visit. On your way to the Midlands, you can check out the Howick Falls, a popular waterfall, and the Midmar Dam, which offers a number of water sports.

Check out the mountains
As a complete contrast to a beach holiday, head for the magnificent Drakensberg mountains. The drive will take around two hours, but the scenery makes it more than worth your while. One of the most popular destinations from Durban is the Cathkin/Champagne Castle Resort. Here you can visit the home of the world-famous Drakensberg Boys Choir or go on a brisk hike to a waterfall or cave.
