Good Food & Wine Show: Cape Town’s Culinary Carnival
Samia El-Balawi
Cape Town is preparing to host the 12th annual Good Food & Wine Show from 26 to 29 May 2011 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre situated in the beautiful marina district of Foreshore. As South Africa’s most popular tourist destination, the multicultural city of Cape Town is the perfect location to showcase such a culinary event.
This mouthwatering exhibition brings together celebrity and Michelin star rated chefs alike in nine state-of-the-art kitchen theatres all contained under one roof, where live cooking demonstrations can be observed in the ‘Chefs in Action Theatres’. From Chef James Martin, who has cooked for the Queen of England to Rachel Allen, known and loved for her practical approach to creating delicious family meals, there really is a chef to satisfy all palates.
For those who enjoy the more experimental side of cooking, the food world’s very own culinary alchemist himself, Heston Blumenthal shall also be attending this exciting event to share his extraordinary knowledge combining the two worlds of food and science. Owner of The Fat Duck, his world renowned 3-star Michelin rated restaurant in Bray, Berkshire, which has also won the coveted title of world’s best restaurant on more than one occasion, Heston is sure to captivate your imagination.
The Good Food & Wine Show is also very much a family oriented day out, where children can become involved in the popular TV channel, CBeebies very own Little Cooks Zone, hosted by the multi-talented cooking and singing personality, Katy Ashworth.
If you envisage yourself as the next up and coming celebrity chef, why not participate in a hands-on, one on one cooking lesson with one of the many celebrity chefs taking part in these daily workshops. Or perhaps, a signed copy of your favourite chef’s latest cookbook would be a welcome addition to your home library and indeed a helping hand in the kitchen.
This event also provides the opportunity for food and wine retailers to present their latest products to the market and meet thousands of potential new customers over this four day food and wine fair, whilst keeping up-to-date with all of the latest worldwide food trends. As the saying goes, “the proof is in the pudding” and what better way for customers to experience this than by sampling the multitude of products on site.
As well as this fantastic food fair, Cape Town offers a wide variety of attractions, from the breathtaking Table Mountain to the most visited attraction in the city and indeed the whole country, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. This world famous harbour houses a wide range of shops and restaurants as well as the Nelson Mandela Gateway providing access to Robben Island. If beaches are your passion, you will be spoilt for choice in this city, which boasts the geography to make it possible to visit several beaches in just one day. Cape Town’s idealistic waterfront position provides the perfect opportunity to partake in its many water based activities, whether it be high energy kite surfing or a relaxing yacht charter.
If you are unable to make it along to the Good Food and Wine Show in Cape Town, you can always catch a taste later on in the year. Further dates are scheduled for the months of July 2011 in South Africa’s busiest port of Durban and September 2011 in Johannesburg, South Africa’s most populous city.
Whether you’ll be traveling to Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg, HotelTravel.com has a host of accommodation options to offer in South Africa’s three major cities. From the Ritz Hotel Cape Town to the Royal Hotel Durban and the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Johannesburg, there is a wide choice of accommodation styles, suiting all budgets.
