This small and relatively new member of the European Union has a lot to offer visitors. Most of Slovakia’s action is centred in the capital city of Bratislava, where you can find the bulk of the country’s cultural institutions, nightlife and dining. The Old Town and imposing Bratislava Castle are just two of the attractions of this 1,000-year-old city. Outside of the capital, visitors can soak in the wonderfully undeveloped countryside as it rises towards the towering High Tatras Mountains along the northern border. Vineyards, thermal spring spas and old ruined castles round off the list of attractions this country has to offer.
Most kids love castles, palaces and the great outdoors, and Slovakia has plenty of these attractions. The country is littered with crumbling old castles, but the Bojnice and Bratislava castles will probably have the most appeal.
New Years Day
Slovakians celebrate the New Year with as much gusto as any other country. All of the towns, especially Bratislava, come alive with general merry-making and live music.
Despite being a relatively new country, Slovakia has a long, unique and interesting history going back nearly 1,000 years. Much of the country is undeveloped, which has helped it maintain its traditional, rural lifestyle, marked by small villages and wonderful old castles. The capital, Bratislava, is one of the highlights and a great place to spend a few days soaking in the atmosphere. Much of Slovakia is dominated by nature, and many of its greatest attractions can be found in the great outdoors. From the rolling lowlands of the south to the soaring Tatras Mountains along the northern border, no trip to Slovakia would be complete without a foray into the wilderness.
Air
Slovakia is not a major European air hub and as such, it may be more convenient to fly into either Prague’s or Vienna’s international airport, both of which are located within close proximity of Bratislava. Vienna’s airport is just 60kms away, with regular connections to Bratislava by bus. You can always fly into the Bratislava International Airport, located nine kilometres from the city centre, but it has a limited number of international flights. Budget carriers such as Sky Europe Airlines and Ryanair have been opening up the route however, and offer service from London, Paris and Rome. Other major cities which have airports include Kosice, Piestany and Poprad.
