Saudi Arabia’s primary port and commercial centre, Jeddah (also known as Jiddah) is one of the country’s more liberal and cosmopolitan destinations. The city is not only the headquarters of many government offices, but also of some big commercial businesses, while also being the gateway for Hajj pilgrims on their way to Mecca during the Hajj season. Unfortunately tourist visas aren’t usually issued by the Saudi government, unless you have a sponsor, but these restrictions are under review. Most visitors arrive for either business or religious pilgrimage.

Islamic New Year: held at the end of January, this day marks the start of the new year and the beginning of the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram. Although this day has no particular religious significance, Muslims use it as a time to remember the life of Muhammad.

The city is served by King Abdulaziz International Airport, which facilitates up to two million pilgrims each Hajj season and is one of three international airports in the country.

The weekend consists of Thursday and Friday, unlike the traditional western weekend, with is on Saturday and Sunday.
