Top Things to See
Exploring the city with no particular agenda can be one of the best ways to get to know Jeddah and its ancient souks and markets. Winding through the narrow alleys of the Old City gives visitors a chance to admire the traditional styled buildings, which are now protected, while a trip to one of Tahliya’s air conditioned malls is also a great way to cool down.
Bangala Fish Market This market is huge and will please any seafood lover with its outstanding array of fish and shellfish. While you may need a clothes peg for your nose, the market makes for a fascinating stroll and allows you to gain an insight into the way Saudi markets have worked for centuries, with packing, cutting and stuffing all open for viewing.
Jeddah Aquarium This is the perfect place to come if you want to learn more about the aquatic life found in the Red Sea, with everything from sharks and coral to vibrantly coloured fish available for viewing. An acrylic tunnel allows visitors to get up close with the creatures, while a 100 metre high tower, the top of which can be reached by an elevator, offers views of the city, which are stunning at night.
Jeddah Water Tower The water tower is situated near Khozam Palace, right next to the International Swimming Pool. While the water tower itself is of little interest to tourists, the greenery and open spaces in this area are ideal for relaxing in, with many families choosing to picnic here.
Khozam Palace Situated in the Old City, this monument is worthy of a photo stop. Only the gate of the palace remains today, with the rest of the structure having been removed. Once the King Saud's Palace, what remains is occupied by the International Swimming Pool.
Old Souks Jeddah’s old souks, including Gabil, Nada and Bab Makkah, are reminiscent of those you will find in Egypt. One of the oldest shopping areas in the city, here you will find items ranging from textiles, clothes and handbags to electronics, religious paraphernalia and carpets. The souks stay open late and are perfect for an evening shopping experience, when the weather has cooled down. Be prepared to bargain for your purchases.
 Tahliya
Tahliya is Jeddah’s most upscale shopping avenue, boasting some excellent outlets and malls. Ideal if you are looking to escape the heat, the air conditioned buildings here offers a wide range of goods. Try the Bin Homran Center, which contains outlets such as Nike, Marks & Spencers and Debenhams as well as sporting goods.
