International Transport

Air
The primary airport in Puerto Rico is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which is situated three miles (five kilometres) southeast of San Juan, while there are secondary airports in the cities of Aguadilla and Ponce.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport offers direct flights to international cities, with the majority of flights being to continental USA.  As the biggest air hub in the Caribbean, you can expect good facilities at the airport and modern and convenient services. Facilities include; shopping and dining outlets, internet services, rest areas and information desks. The airport is divided into three terminals: Terminal A, the Main Terminal and the American Airlines Terminal, the latter which is also used by American Eagle.

Transfer options from the airport are by road, with local buses and taxis available from outside both arrival entrances for the short journey into the city. Those with a room booked at a reputable hotel will likely be offered a transfer, complimentary of their hotel. Those in need of advice with regards to transportation options will find Puerto Rico Tourism Company representatives at the airport waiting to assist. Alternatively, it is possible to rent a car from the airport and drive to your hotel.

Sea
It is possible to arrive in Puerto Rico by boat at Mayaguez, on the west coast of the island, from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. It’s a popular route, especially during peak holiday periods, and visitors wishing to use this ferry service should book tickets in advance. The island is also a popular stop off destination for cruise ships touring the Caribbean, with liners docking in San Juan.

Domestic Transport

Metro
A metro system, known as the Tren Urbano, operates in San Juan. The single line runs from Bayamon to Minillas, with stops 16 stops in between. Services run from Monday to Sunday, 05:30 to 23:30 and fares are charged at a single rate for all journeys. The majority of stations are elevated, with only two underground stations and the remainder at ground level.

Rail
Puerto Rico has two railway systems: the Port of Ponce Railroad and Tourism Railroads. The former service is a short track that is mainly used for cargo purposes and is of no use to tourists, while the latter services include the El Parque del Tren in Bayamón and the Arroyo Train in Arroyo.

Bus
Many of Puerto Rico’s larger towns and cities operate local bus services, while journeys between cities and towns can be made by minivans known as públicos. These are a cheap and convenient means of getting about, but can be uncomfortable if you are covering a long distance.

Car
Travelling by car is by far the best means of getting around Puerto Rico, with car hire available at all airports and in major towns and cities. The system of freeways, expressways and highways is comprehensive, making most places easily accessible. Air conditioning is a necessity, as the heat can make driving uncomfortable and the interior of vehicles soon heat up when parked. It is advisable to rent a small sized car, as many roads are narrow and parking can be difficult. Road signs are in Spanish, so it helps to known the Spanish name of your destination.

Taxi
While regular, metered taxis are available in San Juan and other large cities, one of the most popular ways of getting about is to take a públicos, which is a type of taxi in the form of a minivan. These link the island’s towns and are recognisable by the 'P' or 'PD' on their license plate. They can take you anywhere and do not operate according to a timetable.

Sea
It is possible to get a ferry from Fajardo to the islands of Culebra and Vieques. These services are operated by the government and are inexpensive, with services running about four times a day. The journey on both routes takes about 1 hour and it’s possible to take vehicles with advance booking.
