Porto’s main airport is Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport. It is located 11 kilometres away from the city centre on the north side of the city. It is the third-busiest airport in Portugal and boasts a number of amenities. You will find banking facilities, ATMs, a post office, many shops, a range of eateries, bars and other refreshment counters; baby changing rooms, medical assistance and airport information desks.
It is linked to the city by a number of public transport options which include the metro, trains, taxis and buses. Buses are by far the more popular as tickets are very cheap. However the journey is slow, taking 40 minutes so be sure to leave plenty of time. If you would rather hire a car and drive yourself, car hire agencies can be found at Arrivals and they are best booked in advance to save time on arrival and also to find the best deals. The roads linking the airport to the city are good and it is possible to reach the city in just 15 minutes.

There are numerous public transport options available in Porto. There are only three main tram lines but these are largely targeted at tourists due to the scenic routes. The majority of tram lines have been replaced by buses, however, and there are many different bus routes to choose from. Travel on the bus and tram is cheap and joint daily, weekly and monthly passes are available.
Porto also boasts an extremely modern and efficient metro network. It has only been operational since 2004 and offers routes throughout the city centre. Daily and weekly passes are available, which offer unlimited travel. Other public transport options include long distance trains and taxis. If you are taking a taxi, make sure they turn the meter on and if you are travelling long distances, always negotiate the fare in advance. Car hire is an also an option for those who want to brave the city’s roads, which are often busy and confusing.
