Top Things to See

Porto is brimming with attractions which will keep visitors busy for days on end. Attractions range from bridges to ancient quarters and from stadiums to palaces. If however you need some time out away from sightseeing, you will also find a wide array of parks and gardens where you can sit back and enjoy a spot of people watching.

Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal)
This site was once the most significant landmark in Porto. Once a beautiful palace, it was demolished over 50 years ago to make way for a brand new sports stadium. The stadium hosts a wide range of sporting events, concerts and theatrical events. The building cannot be missed due to its imposing dome which towers above the city at 30 metres high. Many tourists arrive to watch a sporting event while many more visit the surrounding gardens which have landscaped areas, beautiful plants and flowers and an array of wildlife.

Dom Luis I Bridge
Work began on this bridge in 1881 after a competition was launched by the government for people to design a new bridge. The winner was an engineer named Teofilo Seyrig, who designed a magnificent arch which stands at 45 metres. It is a must for budding photographers and also at night as it is lit up and the scenes across the river are stunning.

Ribeira
This ancient part of the city is home to narrow winding alleys and traditional houses bursting with colour. The charm of days gone by has been captured and preserved allowing tourists to wander round and get a glimpse into historic Porto. However, it is also a district full of contrasts as it comes alive at night with trendy new bars, restaurants and clubs all opening their doors for the young and the young at heart.

Sao Bento Station
This impressive station was built on the site of an old convent in 1916. Inside the station, there are mosaic riles which reproduce historical scenes and add to the beauty of the building. It is an important piece of architecture in the city and while it is only used for regional trains, many people visit just to see the mosaics.

Stock Exchange Palace
Like many other buildings in the city, this Baroque palace was designed by Nicolau Nasoni in the 1700s. Inside the palace, visitors will find beautiful carvings and decor dating to the 1700s as well as the famous Arabian Hall. It has become something of a national monument and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
