Rock in Rio 2012: Ruck Around the Clock

Amy Van De Casteele

Contrary to its title, the highly popular Rock in Rio festival will not actually be held in Rio this year, but in its two other patron cities, Lisbon and Madrid. A musical institution which brings together the greatest bands and solo acts, this festival is an event not to be missed at any costs. Since it was founded in 1985 by Roberto Medina, Rock in Rio has made a name for itself as one of the biggest music festivals in the world. In its tumultuous history, the event has featured incredible line-ups of such rock, pop and heavy metal greats as Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, Prince, Neil Young, Evanescence, Coldplay and Metallica.

Attendance figures for each festival soar into the hundreds of thousands, and a rockin’ good time is had by all - so much so that some bands make a re-appearance at another edition of the festival. Guns N Roses and Iron Maiden have both performed more than once.

This year, the compelling Lisbon festival programme will include global heavy metal superstars – and Rock in Rio veterans – Metallica, as well as Linkin Park, the haunting Evanescence, Maroon 5 and husky-voiced crooner Bryan Adams. Several world-class DJs, including DJ Harvey and DJ Vibe, will also be spinning the decks for the enjoyment of the pumped up party crowds. Meanwhile some old favourites will be gracing the concert stage, such as Bruce Springsteen with his E Street Band, the Smashing Pumpkins and Brazilian singer/songwriter Erasmo Carlos.

The festival will be spread out over several days, taking place on May 25 and 26, and June 1, 2 and 3. For die-hard rock fans, the opening night of the event is sure to be a big draw, as Metallica will be headlining the bill beginning at 7:00pm, and will be followed by the likes of Evanescence, Mastodon and Sepultura. For lovers of a softer kind of melody, however, the night of 2 June will be an occasion to remember, as Stevie Wonder, Bryan Adams and sultry English songstress Joss Stone will be taking to the stage as part of a soulful line-up. Whatever your taste in music, you are sure to find something to please you on Rock in Rio Lisbon’s programme.

The venue for this musical extravaganza is Lisbon’s spacious Bela Vista Park. Visiting the Portuguese city for the event will give you an excellent chance to explore Lisbon and take in the sights, and you will find an extensive selection of accommodation available if you decide to stay for the duration of the event. Hotels like the Jorge V Hotel, the Vip Inn Veneza Hotel and the Amazonia Lisboa Hotel offer comfortable 3-star accommodation at low-budget prices. Meanwhile establishments like the Avenida Palace Hotel Lisbon and the Bairro Alto Hotel provide luxurious rooms and 5-star service.
