Cebu is the capital of the province of the same name in the southern Philippines, and was the site of the first Spanish settlement in the country. The city has a population of approximately 700,000 residents, while the population of the metropolitan area exceeds two million.
Negros Island offers the most challenging trekking in the area, and the opportunity to climb close to an active volcanic crater. The peaks on Negros rise more than 8,000ft above sea level, and provide a challenge even to the fittest climber. There are also trekking possibilities on Cebu Island. With hilltops reaching just over 3,000ft, many of the climbs are suitable for families with young children. Mount Montepeller and Osmena Peak are two of the favourites to climb on Cebu, and perfect spots both to experience the jungle and appreciate the incredible views from the top.
Sinulog Festival: Cebu's biggest festival of the year occurs in January, with concerts, parties, street dancing and a Mardi Gras parade. This is carnival time in the southern Philippines and events are scheduled every day for a week. The main reason for the celebration, however, is to pay homage to the carved wooden image of the Santo Nino. This image of Jesus as a child is said to be miraculous and was a gift in the 16th century from the explorer Magellan. Pilgrims in their tens of thousands come to the Basilica Minore del Sto Nino to observe the sinulog, a dance performed while prayers and chants are recited by candlelight.
This museum contains the remains of the San Diego shipwreck, as well as a great deal of information about the culture and history of the people of the Philippines. Managed by the Philippine Tourism Authority, the museum features displays of artefacts that include cannons, coins, helmets, lockets, Ming porcelain pieces and sword fragments. The grounds boast lush vegetation and well-kept flower beds.
The easiest way to get around Cebu Island is by taxi, and most taxis that you'll come across here are metered. Typically, metered trips are not costly, but drivers may try to charge you more once they know you're a tourist. If this occurs, you're likely to pay double what you'd otherwise pay. If you don't succeed in getting the driver to switch on the meter, it's a good idea to look for another taxi. You'll find that most drivers don't carry change, so carrying currency in small denominations is helpful. For a pleasant driver providing good service, a small tip is appreciated.
Visitors should be aware that kidnappings in Cebu have been on the increase in recent years. Although these incidents are rare, some popular tourist resorts have been targeted. There have also been occasional bombing threats in urban areas. Tourists are advised to keep up-to-date on potential dangers in areas they intend to visit, to avoid travel to remote places and to inform relatives or friends of their travel plans.
