Airports
The nearest airport to Boracay is a very small domestic facility located at Caticlan in the municipality of Malay in the province of Aklan. The airport receives flights from Asian Spirit and South East Asian Airlines only. Flight times from the Philippine capital city of Manila are 35 to 45 minutes. Connections are also available with Cebu City’s Angeles/Clark International Airport. There are seasonal services from Coron Airport also. Flights from Manila to Caticlan by Air Philippines are due to begin at the end of 2007.
A larger airport is located at Kalibo, however, the journey time to Boray is longer than from Caticlan to Boracay. Currently Kalibo Airport is served by Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific with flights from Manila taking just 35 minutes. Visitors who choose to fly to Caticlan Airport are required to transfer to the nearby Caticlan port by tricycle, while those flying into Kalibo Airport can take a bus or a minivan service to the same port. From the port, regular ferry services run to Boracay.
Public Transport
It’s possible to reach Boracay by boat from Manila although the journey is quite long and services operate only once a week in low season and twice a week in high season. The alternative from Manila is to take one of the Philtranco coach services that run regularly to Mindao via Caticlan. The journey is arduous, however, taking a lengthy 12 hours. Once at Caticlan, travellers can take one of the frequent ferry services from the port to the island of Boracay.
Once on the island, visitors can get around by a number of different modes of transportation with motor-tricycles providing the most popular, convenient and cheapest option. These vehicles are easily found anywhere along the island’s main road and outside resorts.
The alternative is to rent a scooter and get around yourself; although this option comes with obvious dangers and is not advisable for those who are not able to deal with the sometimes aggressive driving conditions. Mountain bikes provide a pleasant way of seeing the island and are available for rent from a number of businesses at White Beach.
