The province of Bohol is an island haven tucked away in the Filipino region of Visayas. This is one of the largest of more than 7,000 islands that comprise the Philippines, and it consistently draws tourists with its natural beauty, hilly interior and long stretches of white, sandy beaches.
The world's smallest primate is also one of its rarest. Named for the long tarsal bones in its feet, the tarsier leaps from one branch to the next in a similar way to a tree frog. Though tarsier once pervaded the northern hemisphere, today they can only be found in Bohol along with a handful of other islands in Southeast Asia. This visitor's centre, complete with captive-bred tarsiers and a small sanctuary with walking paths where visitors can view the saucer-eyed primates in their natural surroundings, is an ideal place for children.
Suroy sa Musikero: the early part of the year, stretching from Christmas to February, sees local musicians staging concerts throughout the towns of Bohol. These concerts are usually accompanied by dinner or refreshments.
This uninhabited island is accessible via a 10-minute boat ride from Panglao town. The peaceful surroundings here include a nice white sand beach, plenty of coconut trees and a sandbar shaped like a half-moon.
The pier located on the northern edge of Tagbilaran attends to an excess of 4,000 daily passengers. Most of the traffic represents passengers on daily fast boats running to and from Cebu. However, there is also a significant amount of traffic between Tagbilaran and Cagayan de Oro, Dipolog, Dumaguete, Manila and Mindanao. Current construction to expand facilities is underway so that the pier will be able to handle a greater throughput of high-speed ferries.
While the easternmost region of the Philippines is occasionally unstable, Bohol is a consistently safe and well-developed stopover for tourists. The infrastructure here takes international interests to heart, and Bohol's visitors are unlikely to encounter any political unrest or instability.
