Airports
Tagbilaran is the capital of Bohol and home to the province's main airport. It is a strictly domestic gateway, with most of its flights connecting Bohol to regional capitals like Cebu City and Manila. Tagbilaran Airport is classified as a minor domestic hub and plays less of a role in transportation than the city's harbour does.
Asian Spirit hosts daily flights to Manila and Cebu. Cebu Pacific, which is the leading discount airline in the Philippines, connects Tagbilaran to Manila. Asia's first commercial airline, Philippine Airlines, also flies to Manila. Meanwhile, South East Asian Airlines operates semi-regular flights to Cebu. Tagbilaran Airport is currently undergoing renovations that, once completed, will allow larger commercial airlines to land in Bohol. Until that time, most of the region’s arrivals by air are routed through the larger airport in neighbouring Cebu.
This small, single terminal airport has basic facilities limited to essentials like telephones and toilets. Taxis from the airport can take you to Tagbilaran city centre.
Public Transport
The pier located on the northern edge of Tagbilaran attends to an excess of 4,000 daily passengers. Most of the traffic represents passengers on daily fast boats running to and from Cebu. However, there is also a significant amount of traffic between Tagbilaran and Cagayan de Oro, Dipolog, Dumaguete, Manila and Mindanao. Current construction to expand facilities is underway so that the pier will be able to handle a greater throughput of high-speed ferries.
On the island itself, most city-to-city transportation consists of buses and minibuses. All of the major cities on Bohol are equipped with a bus terminal, with the most comprehensive terminal on the island being in Tagbilaran City, specifically in Dao. From here, it is possible to book travel to virtually any destination on Bohol on a daily basis.
Within each city, transport options range from tricycle rickshaws to motorbikes and jeepneys. The latter are reminiscent of the WWII-era jeeps that the American infantry left behind. While most of the jeepneys are impressive remakes of the old classics, there are a few vintage vehicles still in operation throughout the Philippines. These throwbacks are brightly decorated and command attention wherever you travel on Bohol.
Tricycles are suitable for compact city streets and journeys of short distances. It is also possible to hire a tricycle by the hour and take a leisurely sightseeing tour. Motorised tricycles are on hand in some of the busier cities. These vehicles can venture a bit farther and faster than their peddling counterparts.
The network of roads throughout Bohol is well-maintained and is constantly improving. Taxis are not as prominent on Bohol as in other parts of the Philippines; however, it is still possible to find them in many of the larger cities. Minivans and taxis can be chartered for journeys between cities. Travelling by hire car is a nice means of getting around, as tourists are afforded the convenience and comfort of travelling according to their own customised itinerary.
