Airports

Cusco is serviced by Velasco Astete International Airport, located five kilometres from the city centre. The small airport handles only a few daily flights, most of them from Lima, Arequipa, Puerto Maldonado and La Paz. All of Peru’s airlines service Cusco, though nearly every flight is domestic, so the majority of international travellers fly through Lima then make a connection.

The terminal has a currency exchange office, an ATM and a tourist-information desk. There are also several tour operators running desks in the Arrivals area. Downtown Cusco is about 20 minutes from the airport, and the only transport options are by taxi or hotel shuttle. Even the humblest hotel offers airport pickup service, so check with your lodging. Taxi drivers will mob you the moment you step out of the terminal. You can save a bit on the fare by not accepting the first few transport offers.

Public Transport

Buses are the most common way to reach Cusco overland. They arrive from most major Peruvian towns, and there are several coach companies to choose from. There are also two PeruRail train stations in the city if you want a more scenic way of getting to Cusco. Most of Cusco’s attractions are in the centre of town within a short walk from the Plaza de Armas. Walking is the best way to get around, but the ubiquitous and cheap taxis are also useful, especially at night.

Taxis in Cusco are regulated and use a standardised fare system. You can hail them on the street, but at night it’s safer to phone for a taxi pickup. The charming tranvía is a mule and cart setup that harks back to the days before motorised transport. They can be hired at the Plaza de Armas are a fun way to get a sightseeing tour at a great price.

Buses in Cusco come in many forms but you really don’t need to use them except to travel well outside the city. Trains are the preferred way to get to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, but you should make reservations in advance. Renting a car is fairly easy in Cusco, and is an ideal way to explore the more remote areas around the Sacred Valley. Avis is one of the international rental firms in the city.
