Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca and gateway to Machu Picchu, is one of South America’s most fascinating travel destinations. History simply oozes from every perfectly aligned Inca stone wall and ornately decorated Spanish colonial church that covers the central core of this ancient city. But Cusco is hardly a time-forgotten relic. The cobbled streets built by the Inca still resonate with a vibrant colourful parade of daily life that is matched by few other South American destinations.

Start at the Plaza de Armas, the historic centre of Cusco that has been the focal point of this city for more than five centuries. Spanish cathedrals stand atop the massive stone foundations laid by the Inca in the very epitome of contemporary mestizo culture. Be sure and visit the extraordinary Inca ruins of Sacsayhuamán just above the city, then jump into the fray of the Central Market. Try and keep your breath as you wander the worn streets at 11,000 feet in elevation. It’s a bit daunting at first, but after a few days you’ll start to feel that heady Andean brilliance.

Cusco is one of Peru’s top travel destinations and boasts hundreds of hotels, hostels, and inns for every budget and level of luxury. The vast majority of lodging falls into the midrange hotel and hostel category, but these basic rooms are cheap and usually comfortable. Try to stay near the centre of Cusco as this is where most of the charm (and attractions) is found. There are even a couple of 5-star luxury hotels to provide some pampering.

If you fly into Cusco, chances are it’s from within Peru. A few domestic flights arrive at Cusco’s airport each day, mainly from Lima. Otherwise, you can take the scenic train or a coach to reach this Andean capital, but few direct international options are available. Fortunately, once you reach the city your feet will prove the best means of getting around.

Weather

Cusco’s climate is heavily influenced by its elevation of 11,000 feet, but overall its weather is fresh and crisp throughout the year with very subtle changes. There are essentially two seasons in Cusco: a wet summer season from October to April and a very dry winter season from May to September.

During the winter months, the skies are often bright and sunny, though rather cold, with temperatures averaging 5°C during the day. Summer sees daytime temperatures pushing 20°C when the sun is shining, but once night falls the air gets cool and crisp. Rain should only be an issue during the summer, when the vast majority of it falls. Be sure, however, to bring a good set of warm clothes no matter what month you visit.

My ratings are based on the relative town - Cusco is not a big city, and the facilities are limited at the hotel as a result. There are also very few rooms, and it is a cosy place. It has prime locat...
