Cautions

Take special care if hiking in the mountains and boating on the fjords in the wintertime when weather is changeable, as well as when driving the nearby mountains.

Electricity

230V, 50Hz – twin, round-pin plugs

Health

Norway has one of the highest levels of health-care standards in the world, with excellent hospitals and clinics, and spotless streets. Bergen is no exception to this and you will find hotels, restaurants, and the infrastructure in general in good order. Be aware that rainfall in Bergen is generally very heavy in the autumn so be sure to pack wet-weather gear along with taking out travel insurance.

Language

Norwegians speak Norwegian, which doesn’t sound dissimilar to Danish and Swedish, two other Scandinavian countries.

Currency

Norway is not currently part of the EU and uses the Norwegian krone, or the NOK. You can import and export as much local and foreign currency as you like.

Customs

As Norway is not part of the EU, visitors from the EU and elsewhere in the world can take advantage of duty-free up to the following amounts: 200 cigarettes or 250 grams tobacco; a litre of spirits (over 17 per cent volume) and a litre of wine, or two litres of wine; and gifts to the value of NOK 5,000.

Etiquette

There is no special requirements regards social etiquette in Norway, although you should ensure you are well dressed at anything but the most informal meal. Norwegians are generally polite and well-mannered, if a little formal, yet easy to get on with. Tourists are not expected to tip but feel free if you were impressed with your meal and the service.

Visa and Passports

European Union citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa also don’t need visas but visitors from these countries must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their intended date of departure.

 Grand Hotel Terminus
 Central
I chose this hotel for its convenient location. The rooms are nice but they are not cleaned everyday (inadmissible for a 4*). The breakfast could be better with a larger choice....
