Airports

Rotorua Regional Airport is a regional hub that serves as gateway to the Taupo volcanic region. Domestic flights connect Rotorua with Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and Wellington. There are plans to expand the facility to accommodate larger aircraft in the hope that Rotorua Regional Airport can one day cater for international flights.

Airlines operating at Rotorua Regional Airport include: Air New Zealand (operated by Eagle Airways, Mount Cook Airline and Air Nelson) and Qantas (sometimes operated by JetConnect). Flying into this facility, passengers can catch sight of thermal vents and other prominent geothermal attractions that have made this area so popular.

Rotorua’s sole airport terminal offers complete facilities for business and leisure travellers. An airport information desk is located near the check-in counters, and hungry travellers will also find a café in this area. Pre-paid broadband internet is available both in wireless form and at several kiosks scattered throughout the terminal. Business conference facilities are also available at the airport.

Super Shuttle transfers passengers from the airport to the city centre (six miles away) and there are numerous taxis that queue outside the Arrivals hall. Car hire is also available through reputable international agencies.

Public Transport

Rotorua is easily-reached overland from Auckland, and there are a number of coaches that offer transport to and from the region. InterCity buses can complete the journey in 4 hours, 30 minutes, and there are usually five daily departures from the long-haul bus station on Fenton street. Phone: +64 9 913 6100.

Rotorua is also a secondary hub for coach travel. Routes that are not operated by InterCity buses are handled by Newmans coach line. From Rotorua, it is possible to book travel to Gisborne, Hamilton, Napier, Taupo, Tauranga and Wellington. An internet-based bus company known as Nakedbus offers discount regional transport that can only be booked online.

Many visitors opt to hire a car when they arrive in New Zealand. From Auckland, Highway 1 heads south through Hamilton and Cambridge before linking up in Tira, from where you can head for Rotorua. Total travel time is about three hours. This area is notorious for being a stretch where local law officers impose heavy fines on drivers travelling over the speed limit, and consequently you’ll find that motorists on Highway 5 are seldom in a hurry.

Once you have arrived in Rotorua city centre, public transportation consists primarily of green CityRide buses. A standard fare applies to all journeys, regardless of length, and discounted ticket books can be purchased at the bus terminal on Pukuatua street. In addition to linking various sectors of Rotorua city proper, there is also a line heading to several of the tourist attractions near Ngongotaha.

Additionally, there are a number of reputable taxi firms in Rotorua. All taxis are metered and offer a flat boarding fee plus mileage rate. A shuttle bus handles transfers to and from the airport, and it is also possible for groups of tourists to charter a shuttle to key tourist attractions throughout the city.

Cycling is another reasonable way to get around the city centre, and it is even possible to bike around portions of Lake Rotorua. There are numerous places to hire a bicycle at an hourly or daily rate, and mountain bikes are the most popular rental. Several off-road tracks run through the surrounding countryside.
