Airports

Queenstown International Airport has grown significantly following new development which tripled the size of its single terminal and refurbished much of the facilities. The airport is located six miles from downtown Queenstown and is well serviced by Air New Zealand and Qantas. Although its flights are limited to major New Zealand cities such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Rotorua, Air New Zealand also operates one weekly flight from Sydney all year round. During the busy ski season, both Air New Zealand and Qantas run direct weekly flights from Sydney and Brisbane.

The single terminal has an ATM and a Travelex currency exchange booth which can handle all your money needs. There is an unremarkable restaurant in the Arrivals area and a number of different shops selling duty-free items, sundries, books and souvenirs. Air New Zealand operates the Koru Lounge on the first floor, but there are no hotels at the airport. A useful information desk can be found in the Arrivals area offering help with transport and tourism information.

The most affordable way to get to Queenstown from the terminal is on Connectabus, which runs between the airport and downtown every 20 minutes. Kiwi Shuttles and Super Shuttle will drop you off at most locations in the downtown area, but the most convenient option is to hire a taxi. Queenstown Taxis and Alpine Taxis both operate from the taxi stand outside the Arrivals area. All the major car hire firms have offices at the airport.

Public Transport

There aren’t many ways to get to Queenstown. If you don’t fly, you will either have to take a coach or rent a car. InterCity coaches operate between the other major towns on the South Island such as Christchurch, as do Magic Travellers and Kiwi Experience coaches.

Fortunately, Queenstown is a wonderfully compact town, so you should be able to walk just about anywhere if you are staying in a centrally located hotel. The town doesn’t have a public bus system, but the Shopper Bus provides excellent transport in and around Queenstown. The Shopper Bus hits all the major corners of town, most of the larger hotels, and the airport. It operates every day from 06:45 until 23:15.

There are two taxi companies in town which are both reputable. You will probably need to call for a taxi, as they aren’t always easy to find on the street. The roads leading into Queenstown are excellent, making for some great driving in the region.
