Marlborough may seem to be all about wine tasting and seafood sampling, but it is, in fact, a great family holiday destination. Offering things to do and places of interest for visitors of all ages, parents with kids in tow won’t struggle to find activities to keep young ones occupied with an array of both natural and manmade attractions on offer. The appeal of the great outdoors is perhaps the region’s most obvious attraction, with any number of activity possibilities for families to pursue. Indoor attractions such as Blenheim and Picton’s cinemas plus the Seahorse World Aquarium are ideal places to visit on rainy days.

Marlborough celebrates all of New Zealand’s national holidays and also enjoys a variety of events and festivals that are exclusive to the region. Since wine is such an integral part of life here, it’s not surprising that the most popular events here are wine-related. January’s wine festival is a chance to celebrate all that is great about the local wine industry, while July’s Marlborough Winter Wine Weekend celebrates the release of the winter vintages. It’s not all about wine, however, with seafood getting its share of exposure at the Havelock Mussel Festival and Kaikoura Seafest.

Marlborough covers a reasonably large area, within which are a number of small towns that offer visitors some great opportunities for exploring. Blenheim is the largest urban development in the region and consequently offers the best selection of manmade sights. The ultimate sightseeing experience is, however, provided by the awesome Marlborough sounds, an area where land and water meet and provide awe-inspiring natural views.

Blenheim, the region’s main city, has its own domestic airport receiving flights from major cities such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The majority of international visitors fly into one of the aforementioned major airports then take a transferring flight to Blenheim. The journey time from Auckland to Blenheim is 1 hour, 15 minutes and from Wellington to Blenheim the flight is just 25 minutes.
