The Scottish sounding city of Dunedin – Gaelic for Edinburgh - is South Island’s second city, after Christchurch, and a major tourist draw. It is different to most other New Zealand cities, with its grand architecture of yesteryear and sophisticated feel, and boasts an incredible setting between rolling hills and the striking Otago coastline.
Visitors who have inquisitive kids that like animals will have an easy time finding things for their kids to do in Dunedin. There are albatrosses, penguins, and seal colonies, as well as wildlife tours, kayaking, train rides and a chocolate factory in the town. Fortunately, most of the child-orientated activities in Dunedin are also great fun for adults.
Dunedin puts on an interesting selection of festivals and events throughout the year, including such delights as a chocolate festival, fashion shows, arts and crafts, lots of fun games for kids and good music at the Summer Festival.
Dunedin was at one time New Zealand’s most culturally rich city and it still displays many fine buildings and a great deal of heritage, best seen in its city centre streets, galleries and museums. The city is also surrounded by nature with a gorgeous coastline and an albatross colony nearby.

Dunedin International Airport is one of New Zealand’s seven international airports and thus receives daily flights from around the country and from some Australian cities, including Brisbane and Sydney. Airport facilities include ATMs, currency exchange, duty-free shopping, several standard shops, a café and car rental agencies.
