Airports

Dunedin International Airport is one of New Zealand’s seven international airports and thus receives daily flights from around the country and from some Australian cities, including Brisbane and Sydney. Airport facilities include ATMs, currency exchange, duty-free shopping, several standard shops, a café and car rental agencies.

Air New Zealand flies to Dunedin from Auckland, Wellington, and Rotorua on the North Island, and from Christchurch and Invercargill on the South Island. Flights also come in via smaller regional airlines throughout the South Island including from Stewart Island and scenic flights.

Unfortunately, Dunedin International Airport is a fair way from the city centre at about 20 miles, as it was the closest flat piece of land to place an airport on within reach of the city. Transport to the city is provided by shuttles and taxis, with Super Shuttle running a door-to-door service as well as standard shuttles into the town centre. Taxis are also available from outside the terminal to provide greater convenience.

Public Transport

Like most other New Zealand cities, Dunedin is easy enough to get about on foot and most visitors choose to walk to see the main attractions, shopping and dining. In addition, bicycles can be hired from outlets throughout the town if your hotel doesn’t provide them. Be warned, however, Dunedin is one of steep streets and busy roads.

Bus travel is the most convenient form of public transport within Dunedin, with cheap and efficient services operating throughout the city centre and out to the suburbs and Otago peninsula.

The most useful bus service for tourists is the main St Clair-Normanby line, which runs every 15 minutes and takes in most of Dunedin’s city attractions. It is easy to spot this service as buses are coloured gold and blue and are operated by Citibus.

Other routes run less frequently with the beige and dark red buses being run by Passenger Transport. Services run daily to other Otago destinations, including Canterbury and Southland, and the peninsula bus route runs from the Otago Museum.

The other way to get about Dunedin is by taxi and there are taxi stands at various places in town, including at the Octagon, near the main post office and at the airport.

The Taeri Gorge Railway is the only rail service in Dunedin, although it is chiefly used as a tourist train as opposed to a way of getting about. Services run from Dunedin to the quaint village of Middlemarch throughout the day. Although Dunedin doesn’t run a public rail service, you can get here by train from Christchurch via a twice weekly service that is available in the summer.
