Canterbury’s charming provincial capital, Christchurch, is the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island. As it sits on the Canterbury plains, Christchurch is nestled between the snow-capped Southern Alps and the dormant remains of a twin system of volcanoes that once pushed this land upward from the sea floor.
There are some outstanding kid-oriented facilities throughout Christchurch, from outdoor parks to sophisticated facilities like the International Antarctic Centre and the Discovery Children’s Natural History Centre at the Canterbury Museum. Hands-on learning is key at Science Alive!, but there are equally as many hands-on opportunities with local wildlife at places like the Orana Wildlife Park.
World Buskers Festival: a 10-day event characterised by street performances and carnival fun. Jugglers, unicyclists, acrobats and clowns fill the streets and Victoria square transforms into a three-ring circus, with audiences enjoying a string of exciting acts. This is one of Christchurch’s best-attended festivals, and it’s easy for visitors to see why.
Tourists to Christchurch enjoy a wide range of attractions that promote the city’s unique heritage, geographic location and indigenous wildlife. A century ago, explorers stopped in Christchurch before continuing to Antarctica, and today the International Antarctic Centre offers insight into this field. Christchurch Cathedral is the city’s key landmark, while themed parks, wildlife reserves, lush gardens and heritage parks are located throughout the metropolitan area.

Christchurch International Airport is an important regional hub that manages an increasing number of international flights every year. This is a convenient gateway for visitors arriving from across New Zealand as well as from several destinations in Australia. Beyond this, there are occasional charter flights to Tokyo, Singapore and Dubai. Flights from Los Angeles connect three times weekly.
