Agadir Introduction

Agadir is situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains along the Atlantic Ocean. The city is a popular tourist destination, largely due to its wonderfully relaxing beach and its gorgeous views. Truly a modern metropolis, Agadir is unlike other Moroccan cities as it is filled with large buildings and wide straight roads. There is an impressive selection of accommodation on offer, including upmarket hotels and resorts. The city also has a variety of European restaurants offering the very best in international cuisine and local favourites.

Agadir is popular for one thing: its beach. The lovely crescent Agadir Bay runs for nine kilometres around the edge of town and is truly one of Morocco’s nicest beaches. Golden sand and a relatively sheltered bay make this an ideal place to create a beach tourist destination; indeed Agadir is Morocco’s premier beach resort.

Agadir’s beach is the central focus of outdoor activities in this town. There are plenty of water sports to enjoy during the long tourist season, and the beach is ideal for lounging or playing. Swimming, unfortunately, is rather dangerous in the sea so many people use the hotel pools for a dip. There are also camel rides along the beach, yacht cruises and some excellent surfing at nearby Taghazout.

To be fair, Agadir is not the most interesting cultural destination in Morocco. People come here for the beach and little else. But you can hardly blame Agadir, since a devastating earthquake in 1960 levelled most of the city and its heritage. Don’t miss exploring the hilltop Kasbah, and it’s certainly worth taking a couple of daytrips to the nearby traditional towns of Tiznit and Taghazout. The Souss-Massa National Park is another gem, offering the best nature scene in the region.

Agadir is essentially a fly-in and fly-out resort destination so its airport is the main entry point to the city. Al-Massira Airport is located 25 kilometres from the centre of Agadir. Its single terminal is spacious and modern, containing every amenity you will need upon arriving in Morocco.
