A playground for Mexico’s rich and famous, Puerto Vallarta first rose to international fame in the 1960s when Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton embarked on a scandalous affair here and attracted hordes of paparazzi. Today, the resort community is popular both with international and domestic tourists, the latter arriving en masse during the week leading up to Easter Sunday.
As with any preeminent resort destination, Puerto Vallarta offers an exciting mix of outdoor and family-oriented activities. Children are thrilled with the dolphin-encounter programmes held at the dolphin centre, and speeding along a zip line through the rainforest canopy is fun the whole family can enjoy. Golfing and water sports are also well catered for. All of these activities can be organised by local travel agents.
Puerto Vallarta's main attractions are natural features centred on the coastline and the Bay of Banderas. The dominant architectural feature is Our Lady of Guadalupe, a modest church constructed in the 1920s and capped by a golden crown that has become the emblem of the city. Virtually all of the facilities are found along the Malecon, a beachfront promenade popular with tourists. Finally, trips to the Marietas Islands or Las Caletas are ideal for nature lovers.

Most visitors arrive in Puerto Vallarta via Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport, situated north of the city. This is the primary gateway into the entire region, receiving more than three million passengers every year. Flights connect to cities across Mexico, with dozens of connections available to cities across Canada and the United States.
