Puerto Vallarta's main attractions are natural features centred on the coastline and the Bay of Banderas. The dominant architectural feature is Our Lady of Guadalupe, a modest church constructed in the 1920s and capped by a golden crown that has become the emblem of the city. Virtually all of the facilities are found along the Malecon, a beachfront promenade popular with tourists. Finally, trips to the Marietas Islands or Las Caletas are ideal for nature lovers.

Beaches
The entire resort community is built up on the coast, with a string of golden-sand beaches backed by hotels, restaurants and shopping venues. As the beaches face west, beautiful sunsets are part of the everyday experience. Playa los Muertos is an exciting stretch of sand, and the fleet of sunbathers by day head indoors and change clothes before the beach is transformed into an open-air party by night. Playa de Oro is found just north of town and is an excellent venue for water sports.

Islas Marietas
This collection of islands is protected by the government and serves primarily as a bird sanctuary. Tourists come for bird watching and spelunking in the island's unique cave formations. Snorkelling and diving opportunities are also excellent here due to the calm waters and excellent visibility.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
This parish church is the most iconic building in Puerto Vallerta. Built in the 1920s, the church blends several architectural styles. Flanked by delicate towers, the main building boasts a single nave and conceals a small chapel. The golden crown atop the church was installed in the 1960s and was recast after an earthquake in 1995.

Las Caletas
An idyllic getaway spot only accessible via an hour-long boat ride, Las Caletas is a nature preserve outfitted with light facilities including hammocks strung up under the shady palms along the waterfront. It's possible to board a sunset cruise and visit Las Caletas in the evening for the Rhythms of the Night exposition, a touristy production that traces culture of ancient indigenous people through music and traditional dance.

The Malecon
Puerto Vallarta's main walkway follows the coastline and supports a variety of entertainment and dining options. Recent renovations resulted in a striking collection of sculptures adding life and colour to this pedestrian avenue. For the ultimate Malecon experience, stop into an open-air bar in the evening and catch a sunset.

Zoological Gardens
These gardens, located in the forests of Mismaloya, were founded to raise awareness of animals around the world. There are more than 350 animals found here, including monkeys, lions, jaguars, crocodiles, large tortoises and exotic birds. Guided tours in English are a nice touch for mid-sized groups.
