Once a quiet fishing village, Mexico’s Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean Sea, grew up quickly when word got out that there was great scuba-diving nearby. Playa is now the focus of the "Riviera Maya". Find the room of your dreams at HotelTravel.com.

Playa del Carmen is a cosmopolitan town located on the Caribbean Sea in the heart of Mexico's Mayan Riviera. The town is small enough for people to walk just about anywhere from the beach to boutiques. A myriad of shopping and dining options ranging from roadside taco stands to upscale, fine-dining restaurants line 5th Avenue, the downtown's pedestrian walkway. After dinner there are plenty of fun bars on the beach and in town where you can relax and listen to live music or dance to sultry Salsa. A typical day can be spent relaxing under a beach umbrella sipping a margarita. The sapphire sea is the perfect temperature for a refreshing dip, and the ocean breeze is steady and cool. There are many opportunities for day trips where you can explore Mayan ruins, snorkel, swim in an underground cave, or visit the charming island of Isla Mujeres. Playa del Carmen is the perfect location with its close proximity to everything the Riviera Maya has to offer.

Playa del Carmen is a beach resort lying about 64 kilometres from Cancun. It is growing rapidly but has not lost any of its small-town feel, and it is still possible to imagine what it would have been like before the mass onslaught of tourists. Today, five-star hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, bars and shops lie alongside excavated digs, pristine jungle and a beautiful coastline.
Playa del Carmen is a great place to visit with the family. There is an abundance of opportunities to take advantage of the beautiful beaches, stunning jungle terrain and also the chance to see some indigenous animals in their natural surroundings. If you need a day of rest and relaxation, there is no better place to head than the beach. There is fun for the whole family here and while the children are busy making sandcastles, you can sit back, relax and soak up the sun.
Playa del Carmen is not purely about ancient relics and civilisations, it is also a tourist hub full of excitement and life. Regardless of whether you want to shop, enjoy some water sports, chill out on a beach or enjoy some of the natural attractions on offer, you’re sure to find it here. The centre of the city is Fifth Avenue, complete with restaurants, shops and people from all walks of life, or if you would prefer to get away from the crowds, the beach at Xpu-Ha is the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy a good book.

Most people who arrive in Playa del Carmen by air will land at Cancun International Airport. This is one of Mexico’s busiest air hubs and is 45 minutes away from the beach resort. A number of international carriers offer direct flights to Cancun although most flights arrive from Mexico City or the US.
