Playa del Carmen is not purely about ancient relics and civilisations, it is also a tourist hub full of excitement and life. Regardless of whether you want to shop, enjoy some water sports, chill out on a beach or enjoy some of the natural attractions on offer, you’re sure to find it here. The centre of the city is Fifth Avenue, complete with restaurants, shops and people from all walks of life, or if you would prefer to get away from the crowds, the beach at Xpu-Ha is the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy a good book.

Cavernas Chaaktun
This is one of the most stunning networks of caves in the area with picturesque rock formations forming impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The surrounding scenery is diverse and offers excellent photo opportunities.

Cozumel
Cozumel is an island just across the water from Playa del Carmen. It is possible to charter a boat and make your own way across, or you may like to join an organised tour for a day. It is home to pristine jungle, stunning beaches and turquoise waters, perfect for nature lovers. There is accommodation on the island so overnight trips are possible.

Quinta Avenida
Known in English as Fifth Avenue, this is the heart of Playa del Carmen. It is a cobblestone pedestrian thoroughfare lined with shops, street stalls, restaurants and bars. The street is incredibly long and full of life, making it a great place to grab a coffee and indulge in a spot of people watching. Any events that take place throughout the year either start or finish here. Anybody looking for a good night here should start at one end of the street and, throughout their holiday, make their way down its full length.

Xel-Ha
This underwater world is a popular attraction for everyone who visits Playa del Carmen. It is actually an ecological theme park where visitors can swim with dolphins and sea turtles, scuba dive, snorkel and for the more adventurous, cliff-diving is even available. There is a large river which is ideal for rafting and also a great chance to spot freshwater fish. The park is very large so hiring a bicycle is a good way to get around it. There is an onsite restaurant and drinks are included in the entry ticket as are snorkels and rafts.

Xpu-Ha
This beach is a favourite with locals as it is a lot quieter than the city’s main beach. It is perfect for getting to know the local people and for sampling some true Mexican food as the restaurants found here only serve up authentic cuisine. There are also traditional cabanas for rent and a dive shop if you wanted to explore the ocean. It’s a great place for you to escape the crowds but still experience a bit of atmosphere.
