Monterrey Introduction
Set in a valley surrounded by the spectacular Sierra Madre Mountains, Monterrey is Mexico's third largest city. It is Mexico's modern-day commercial and industrial powerhouse. The city's main square, Plaza Makro, is one of the largest in the world and is a bustling beehive of activity. The Cathedral and buildings around the plaza are excellent examples of modern colonial architecture blending in with the old. There are several museums in Monterrey, including the famous museum of contemporary art. The Barrio Antiguo - "Old Neighborhood", is full of charming old buildings which have become a hot bed for fashion with trendy boutiques, hip cafes, art galleries and antique shops. It's also a major centre for nightlife. The mountains surrounding Monterrey offer stunning scenery containing numerous canyons, hiking trails and roads criss-crossing deserts and forests. Within an hour’s drive of Monterrey, there are impressive ecological attractions such as beautiful waterfalls and vast caves.
