Top Things to See

The Gran Plaza and historic Barrio Antiguo harbour the best collection of attractions in Monterrey and many people tend not to stray too far from these areas. As great as they are, look a little further and you will no doubt happen upon the likes of the Commerce Lighthouse, while farther afield is the amazing Cumbres National Park.

Barrio Antiguo
This is Monterrey’s old quarter, or old town, and is the place to head for a wander and to get a good feel for the city. It is one of cobblestoned streets and colonial houses as well as atmospheric cafés, restaurants and art galleries. Barrio Antiguo is also the place to come of a night for some entertainment as it also has numerous bars, with Padre Mier being a popular party zone.

Commerce Lighthouse (Faro de Comercio)
Faro de Comercio in La Gran Plaza is a famous city landmark and one of the tallest structures here. It is futuristic-looking and lofty. You may want to take a second glance to catch it, its bright red facade is pretty much unmissable when lit up at night.

Cumbres National Park (Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey)
Located in Santa Catarina just west of Monterrey on Carretera Federal 40, Cumbres National Park is known for its fine surroundings and particularly for its startling rock formations. The highlight is the Canón de la Huasteca—a series of striking jagged cliffs—while closer to town the park also encompasses the Chipinque Ecological Park, with its great hiking and biking.

Grand Plaza (Gran Plaza o Macroplaza)
The Grand Plaza is the main tourist attraction in Monterrey. It is one of the biggest plazas in the whole of Mexico and comes with a huge number of hotels, shops and restaurants. There are also many stylish buildings and attractions here, including Monterrey cathedral, the casino, Government Palace and several theatres.

Monterrey Casino (Casino de Monterrey)
Monterrey Casino resides in a stylish and grand building which was rebuilt after fire damage. It was originally conceived way back in the 1860s when it was employed as a local cultural centre. Today, however, fortunes are won and lost behind its striking Neoclassical facade.
