Top Things to See

There is so much to see and do in Mexico that you cannot possibly get around to everything in just one trip. You will definitely want to visit some of the awe-inspiring ruins, and spend time in the great outdoors with the many activities that are available.

Beaches
Mexico is home to some of the best beaches in the world. Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay provides sunbathers with over 30 miles of golden sands. Meanwhile the more popular Playa Los Muertos is vibrant with a healthy dose of restaurants, beach volleyball and water sports.

Cancun provides some of Mexico’s best beaches. Sands stretch from the Yucatan's Quintana Roo coast almost all the way to the border. The water is so clear you can see through to the coral reefs below. There are plenty of opulent beachfront hotels here, with more restaurants, nightlife, and activities than any other resort destination in Mexico.

Churches
The Catedral Metropolitana in Mexico City was completed in 1788 and displays a mix of baroque, neoclassical and Mexican churrigueresque architecture. Another beautiful church is the Santa Prisca y San Sebastian Church in Taxco, which has an intricately carved façade and is graced with paintings by Miguel Cabrera, one of Mexico's most famous artists.

Morelia's Cathedral is said to be the most beautiful in the country. Constructed of brownish-pink stone that turns red in the late-afternoon sun, it’s not to be missed if you are in the area. In Puebla, the Capilla del Rosario, located in the church of Santo Domingo, is beautiful and is dressed in Talavera tile and gold leaf.

Top Things to Do

People-watch in a plaza
With all the hustle and bustle of the cities, it can be nice to take time to visit Mexico’s pretty plazas. Local town plazas are a great place to simply sit and watch the world go by. Veracruz's main plaza is always lively with music and dance; while Oaxaca's is serene and well kept. In Mexico City, Alameda Plaza is home to children playing while couples hold hands and street performers entertain the crowds.

Listen to music
Mexico’s music is lively and upbeat. In Mexico City, you can listen to loud mariachi music in the famous Plaza de Garibaldi. Alternatively, you may come across romantic boleros sung to the strumming of a Spanish guitar, as well as mambos and cha-cha-chas.

Watch some traditional dance performances
Mexicans love dancing as much as music and you won’t have to search long to find regional folk dancing. Performances are diverse and colourful expressions of Mexican traditions.

Visit a regional fair
You’ll find a regional fair in almost every Mexican town. The fairs showcase the best products of the region, ranging from tequila and livestock to jewellery and handicrafts.

Michoacan's Million Monarch March
For a truly unique experience, visit Michoacan in the winter months for the Million Monarch March. As you stand in a beautiful mountain forest, you’ll be surrounded by millions of fluttering monarch butterflies.

Ride the rails
The Chihuahua-Pacific Railway is a scenic rail route from Los Mochis on the Pacific coast to Chihuahua. It passes through Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon).

Enjoy the nightlife
There is so much going on at night that you might be tempted to sleep all day. The capital, Mexico City, offers some of the nation’s best nightlife. You’ll find spicy Latin, Cuban, and alternative music in the Polanco neighbourhood; while the more trendy Condesa neighbourhood is home to a more upscale night scene. In Guadalajara, you’ll find a slightly more sedate nightlife consisting of classical music and jazz, as well as theatre. There’s also plenty of salsa and mariachi music to keep things lively.

The most varied nightlife of all the beach destinations is found in Puerto Vallarta. Here, you will find small clubs that feature live jazz, blues and salsa. The glitzy Acapulco dance clubs are much more extravagant, while some of the nightclubs in Cancun can pack in up to 3,000 partygoers. Meanwhile Cabo San Lucas is known for its casual beach bars and restaurants.
