Birthplace of tequila and rodeos, Guadalajara is the capital of the Jalisco region in central-western Mexico and the country’s second city. It is as Mexican as they come, differing greatly from the likes of Mexico City, Cajun, and other touristy Mexican climes, by retaining a unique Spanish charm in its colonial architecture and scenic streets.
Options for children in Guadalajara are good and there is some good walking and hiking in and around town. The top attractions in Guadalajara for children are the Selva Magica amusement park and Guadalajara Zoo, while hikers should head for the Barranca de Oblatos gorge. There is also a fine park in town as well as bullfighting and rodeo rings.
Guadalajara is loaded with elegant buildings, monumental landmarks and bustling squares in the historical centre, including the likes of the Guadalajara Cathedral, the equally impressive Zapopan Basilica and the fine Governor's Palace. Just outside town are several interesting suburbs, including the ceramic producing Tlaquepaque, while the Three Waterfalls makes for a great daytrip.

Libertador Miguel Hidalgo International Airport is the gateway to Guadalajara, with flights from many US and Mexican cities. Mexicana, AeroMexico and Aviacsa all fly here, along with American Airlines, Continental, and Delta. You can also get here by budget airlines Aerocalifornia, Interjet, and Volaris Jet from within Mexico. Facilities are so-so and include currency exchange and duty-free, but be aware that the airport gets very busy.
