International Transport

Juan N. Alvarez International Airport handles a large number of flights from within Mexico and from destinations all over North America. Aeromexico and Mexicana operate direct domestic flights from the country’s main cities as well as connecting flights from several American cities. European travellers will have to make a connection in one of the major US cities to reach Acapulco.

The terminal at Acapulco’s airport has every amenity any traveller would need. There are ATMs, banks and currency exchange offices on site, as well as several shops and restaurants. The airport information desk is located in the main entry hall.

Domestic Transport

Private taxis are not allowed to carry passengers to town, so the best transport option is Transportes Aeropuerto, a special airport taxi service. English-speaking staff will help you arrange your taxi at the designated desk outside the terminal. You can choose from a slower, but cheaper, shared minivan or hire your own individual taxi. Tips are optional, but appreciated.

Public Transportation

There are only two options for getting around in Acapulco. Taxis can be found everywhere and are very inexpensive if you’re travelling in the downtown area. Always settle on the price before you even get into any taxi.

Hotel taxis will likely be three times as expensive as a taxi you hail on the street, though they tend to be nicer. Hotel taxis adhere to a price list for popular destinations posted in the lobbies of most hotels. Your driver may try to suggest that you stop by a certain jewellery shop or his uncle’s restaurant for a great bargain. It’s not always a bad idea, but be aware that there’s always an angle. Tipping isn’t expected, but always appreciated if you enjoyed your ride.

Public buses are the other option for getting around. Believe it or not, using the bus system is easy and cheap. Covered bus stops can be found all along the Costera with maps on the walls showing the routes. There are two types of buses which ply the same routes. The newer air-con Aca Tur Buses and the older school-bus style.

To reach more distant destinations such as Puerto Marques and Pie de la Cuesta, simply look for these well-signed but less frequent buses and hop on. It’s amazingly easy.
