Terengganu Events and Festivals
January
 Chinese New Year: a season of great celebration, the Chinese New Year involves much family-centred celebration. Relatives and friends give red packets (angpows) with cash to children and young adults. While most of Malaysia celebrates this holiday for two days, the festivities in Terengganu are limited to one day.
February
 Hari Raya Haji: celebrated by the Islamic community, this holiday falls on the last day of the Muslim calendar and lands in either February or March. Traditionally, this is the last day of the pilgrimage to Mecca, when meat from animal sacrifices is shared with the poor.
March
Anniversary of the Sultan’s Installation: this holiday is specific to Terengganu, and some shops and government offices may be closed in observance.
Muslim New Year: Muslims in Terengganu celebrate the first day of the new Islamic calendar by exchanging cards and gifts.
April
Sultan’s Birthday: the current Sultan of Terengganu was born on 29 April, a day designated as a state holiday. Banks and government offices are closed in observance.
Nuzul Quran: usually falling in mid-April, Muslims celebrate the 17th day of Ramadan with religious services at a mosque. This holiday is held in remembrance of the Prophet Mohammad’s revelation in Mecca.
May
Hari Raya Puasa: on the first day of Hijrah, the Islamic community celebrates the end of the Ramadan fast with joyous celebration. Festivities begin with services in the mosque and then proceed with visitations and hospitality.
June
Birthday of His Highness the King: 6 June is celebrated with plenty of activity including a parade.
July
Awal Muharram: the journey of the Prophet Mohammad to Medina from Mecca is celebrated on the first day of the first month of Muharram. Discussions and religious lectures are held in mosques across the region.
August
 National Day: all across Malaysia, national independence is celebrated with festive decorations, parades and general celebration on 31 August.
September
 Malaysia Fest: hotels and other tourist establishments across Malaysia celebrate this time of year with exhibitions on local culture and cuisine that encourage tourists to get involved.
