Visitors are drawn to Selangor for its rich cultural heritage and its wealth of outdoor activities and shopping opportunities. The state of Selangor is located on peninsular Malaysia's west coast, covering an area of nearly 5,000 square miles. The state surrounds the country's capital city, Kuala Lumpur (KL), and stretches from KL to Port Klang, the busiest port in Malaysia and the closest harbour to the federal capital district.
MINES Wonderland at Mines Resort City is one of the top theme parks in the area, featuring amusement rides, a snow-house and facilities for various water sports. There's a restaurant on site and several refreshment stands as well. If you come to the park at night, you'll have the chance to see a parade of sparkling floats on the lake and aqua and laser shows. Adults will also find things to do here, as there's a shopping complex and an exhibition centre onsite. Phone: +60 3 8942 5010.
Chinese New Year: traditionally, the Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 consecutive days. This joyous occasion is a time of family reunions, when relatives often travel long distances to be together. Red envelopes known as ang pow are given among family members as a sign of prosperity for the coming year. Oranges are also given as gifts, symbolising luck for the recipients. Lion dances are an important part of the festivities.
These caves are located nine miles (15kms) north of Kuala Lumpur and are one of Selangor's most popular sights. There are three large caves in total, including the main cave temple. The cave housing the temple is 100 metres high, and features elaborate Hindu shrines. Once inside, there's a steep climb of 272 steps. During the yearly Thaipusam festival, more than 100,000 devotees scale these steps.
The region's huge and vastly-improved Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is located 27 miles (43kms) south Kuala Lumpur, in Sepang. Having opened in 1998 to commercial traffic, it's now a world-class facility boasting state-of-the-art equipment and a full range of amenities for passengers.
Immigration authorities don't require visitors to show proof of vaccinations on arrival in Malaysia. It's recommended, however, that you ensure you are up to date with standard inoculations before you travel.
