Rated #10 for all Sarawak hotels
The staff at the hotel is fantastic-- warm, helpful, thoughtful. We stayed at the hotel - unknowingly- on a huge Malaysian holiday weekend, and there were enormous family groups from Sarawak everywhere. Even so, the staff was incredibly nice and never seemed overwhelmed. We paid $75 for a room, including breakfast, and we were happy with what we got for the money-- decent breakfast (though not on the level of the Kuching Hilton), children ate free, good pools, lovely location for the cottages. Try to get a room in a cottage along the beachfront. They are quite prettily furnished with te...

Damai Beach Resort is not that bad; but it feels very big and quite empty (at the moment). Undergoing renovations on the rooms up on the hill. Although the beach was nice, and the restaurants were adequate if not great, after three days wanted to leave. It feels a bit isolated, and not in a good way. Room may have been a bit overpriced, but with the vacancy level as low as it was when we went, someone has to pay for all those renovations I guess!

They are quite prettily furnished with teak wood and locally-carved mirrors and framed reproductions of cultural artifacts, and it is wonderful to be able to see the ocean. We ate dinner one night by the pool and it was amazingly good- the grilled fish was delicious (but be sure to go to Palm Garden restaurant-- up the road--they pick you up for free-- maybe the best seafood of my life, apart from the Top Spot in Kuching). The beach isn't as bad as some reviews make it sound. Very gradual beach, no sand flies and no sea lice, and the water was like a bathtub- no waves at all. Be sure to set aside some beach time around sunset, at low tide. It is magical to dig for crabs, build sandcastles, and look for Irrawaddy dolphins from the beach. I am recommending that our friends from Singapore come here as a great long weekend beach weekend, especially since there is so much to do in the area-- orangutan rehabilitation center (30 min from kuching), Bako National Park (amazing), Sarawak museum and shopping in Kuching, wildlife cruises with CPH travel, sea kayaking, snorkeling at Satang, visiting the wonderful Sarawak cultural village- and don't forget the amazing hike up Mt. Santubong, right behind the hotel. Our four year old and six year old made it about halfway up the mountain and loved clamboring around on the rocks and ropes. The waterfall is a good shorter hike too. We loved the staff at this hotel, the amazing food at Palm Garden, the beach at sunset, and we plan to return again from the US.

The hotel should not take additional fees for taxis. Coming from city or airport is cheaper than starting the same way from the hotel.Taxi driver have to pay a fee to the hotel for beeing called. That fee finally has to pay the guest as additional cost.

We had problems with our safedeposit. They would'nt fix it at once, took them 3 days.. We were put at the longhouse, smt that we were not told before we arrived. It was a distance to the pool, we needed to call a car. And as a family with small children you need a lot of stuff, and smt you forget some of your stuff... Getting up and down with the van took a lot of time..
But after all.. Friendly staff and nice location! We enjoyed our stay! Value of our money!!!

Th whole stay was almost perfect except that they did not informn at the time of booking tht the uppr swimming pool was being renovated. That was the reason I got the deluxe seaview and paid higher so I could have a more private pool. At the very least at the counter they should have upgraded me to a suite to be fair.

I liked the location near the beach, and the easy way to make trips from the hotel to the Cultural Village and Bako National Park (Bako is a real recommendation to go to, please make sure you also arrange a park guide.) The restaurant facilities could have been better. Not enough staff to serve you, and also the roomservice could have been more precise in delivering the food. The Beach is very nice.

Spacious room, excellent service but the hotel is "aging" and has limited F&B outlets - no really good bar to have a sundowner or after-dinner drink. Staff were very friendly & efficient and though it is 40mins to Kuching the shuttle is cheap & on-time. Overall good value for money for a 3 or 4 day break.
